Video Feel: The Big Difference

I try to explain the big difference between what I do when I produce a video versus what a lot of videographers do, all has to do with feel. A good video feels right.

There has been this giant influx of video content on the internet due to the demand from social media combined with high quality cameras being sold at affordable prices. Ultimately, that means people can create videos that “look good” without understanding how to make videos “feel good.”

High quality does not just mean that you have a generally properly exposed video with audio that’s understandable. This is where it gets a bit difficult to explain. Take a look at what I mean.

Here is a comparison between someone that’s just using a good camera, and my work.

The first is from someone else who made sure the picture was decently exposed and they had good audio. (I do want to be careful and not bad mouth other work, but there is a difference here.) It appears they simply used the light that was available around them, but added nothing and blocked out nothing. This is the most common type of video I see, and if you have low to no budget, it will get the job done in a pinch. There is certainly a place for this.

Now, here is a screenshot of an ad I did for a buddy of mine. (P.S. Choate BBQ is incredible and you should definitely eat there!)

Much of the light in this video, I added. I intentionally added color where there was none. There is now blue on the back wall and as he moves in the video you can see red reflecting off stuff under the counter. I positioned Bryan in a spot that separated him from the background and had a lot of interest. I used a bit of water-based haze in the room to soften the image. Finally, I lit him a bit more from one side to give him some nice dimension with shadows.

See, it just feels right.

If I have done my job well, you won’t understand why it feels right, you’re just going to watch your video and think, “Wow, that feels good.” And at the end of the day, there is a big difference between it feeling professional, and amateur. I specialize in video production that feels good.

If you would like to talk more about how I can make your video ad and business feel good to the customers that watch it, I’d love to help you. Fill out the request a call form and we can talk more.

Be blessed and have a great day!
